Ingredient 5: 24/7 Negative News
Open a discussion about the impact of 24/7 Negative News:
Does anyone think the way we are getting our information and consuming information about our world is “healthy” for us in terms of our ability to get along, and have peace and harmony in our society?
Some statements to consider to get the conversation started:
All we watch all day long are "anomalies" and bad acts, representative of the worst of human kind. Non- representative of reality.
Good news typically happens slowly. Bad things, car wrecks, murders take seconds to happen;
Horrible acts of violence come to define our outlook - how could they not?
The news is mostly negative, it’s hard therefore for us not to believe that evil, trauma, bad life experiences, and bad people define our reality, when in fact, these things are the exceptions to the rules.
(Leaders, consider showing a negative political ad here)
Negative political advertising nearly guarantees we think less of our leaders and less of ourselves.
Cable News Channels: For example, CNN on the far Left, and Fox News on the far Right tends to add fuel to the negativity fire, which is already burning.
